2017 Moon cycle 12: Cold Moon

image: chart showing this cycle's new Moon

    2017 Moon Cycle 12:
  • new Moon in Scorpio,
  • full Moon in Gemini

This cycle begins on November 18th with the Sun and new Moon at 26° Scorpio 19′ and comes to fruition on December 3rd with the full Moon at 11° Gemini 40′.

The title of this post, The Cold Moon, refers to the December full moon as identified by the Algonquin tribes. The MoonConnection (link below) says about this Moon:

Winter takes a firm hold and temperatures plummet at this time. Sometimes this moon is also called the Long Night Moon as the winter nights lengthen and the moon spends more time above the horizon opposite a low sun. The full moon name often used by Christian settlers is the "Moon before Yule".

For background on the Moon names and for other information on the Moon, take a look at MoonConnection. Keep in mind this is the name of the full moon, which occurs in December.

Two U.S natal charts are again being considered--one with Scorpio rising and one with Sagittarius rising (new Moon and full Moon are linked here). In the natal chart with Scorpio rising the Sun is positioned in the 9th house, ruled by Jupiter; Sagittarius rising places the Sun in the 7th house, ruled by Venus. Both placements include the Moon as ruler because the Sun is in Cancer. In the Sagittarian chart the Moon's placement is in the 3rd house, conjunct the cusp; in the chart with Scorpio rising the Moon is in the 4th house, her home.

Currently, Uranus, Neptune, Pallas, and Chiron are retrograde. Neptune will turn direct in Pisces on November 23rd and Chiron will turn direct in Pisces on December 6th. Mercury with turn retrograde in Sagittarius on December 3rd (at the full Moon) and return to direct on the 23rd.

At the new Moon there is a large stellium in Scorpio, containing Vesta, Jupiter, Venus, Moon, and Sun. At the full there is another stellium, this time in Sagittarius; it contains Venus, Sun, Saturn, and retrograde Mercury. Common to both stelliums are the Sun and Venus.

The New Moon

The new Moon signals the start of this cycle and promises new opportunities. In Scorpio the Moon is ruled by Pluto; in traditional astrology Mars rules Scorpio. In this sign she takes on the qualities of honesty, fairness, and loyalty. While the Moon in Scorpio can be focused and faithful, she can also be secretive and jealous. Café Astrology says about this new Moon in Libra (time-sensitive link):

This lunation stimulates a new beginning in the fixed water sign of Scorpio. It’s a time when we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Scorpion–passionate, resourceful, focused, probing, deep, and perceptive–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives. Scorpio New Moons are generally good for working on our self-mastery skills. We may want to pinpoint the things in our lives that make us feel out of control, such as addictions and debts, and work on freeing ourselves of these emotional burdens.

Pluto, ruler of the stellium in Scorpio, is conjunct Juno in Capricorn and both are square Mars in Libra. Widely opposed to Mars are Uranus and Pallas in Aries; a closer square is made by Pluto and Juno. This pattern is commonly known as a T-square.

With Scorpio ascending, the U.S. chart has the Moon placed in the 1st house. Affairs indicated by the 1st are

the nation as a whole, the nation's first impression or image, general national characteristics, the national myths, the projected personality and interests of the nation's people. (Neptune Café/Keywords page)

Jupiter is exactly conjunct the Ascendant.

In the 1st house Jupiter, Venus, Moon, and Sun are heavily influenced by Pluto in Capricorn and the 3rd house. This suggests that 3rd house matters--communication, transportation, and all forms of mass media--will strongly influence 1st house affairs.

The natural ruler of the 1st house is Mars, currently in Libra and conjunct the cusp of the 12th, natal Saturn, and natal Juno. There is a air of self-undoing about this placement of Mars, particularly in the areas of diplomacy and social rituals.

In the Sagittarius-ascending chart the Moon and Sun occupy the 12th house where Neptune dominates. Affairs of the 12th house include:

hospitals, anything hidden, secret enemies, secret societies, subversives, prisons, mystics, crime fighters, saboteurs and spies, welfare programs and recipients. (Neptune Café/Keywords page)

House ruler Neptune is retrograde in Pisces and the 3rd house and conjunct natal Ceres. Neptune is also square natal Uranus in Gemini and the Ascendant..

Sign ruler Pluto is in Capricorn and conjunct the 2nd house cusp, where it is also conjunct Juno.

The Full Moon

When the Moon reaches its position at full--opposite the sun--she will be in Gemini, ruled by Mercury, which turns retrograde on this day. When new and in Scorpio she was centered on power, both financial and political, and big business; when full in Taurus her keynotes are communication, travel and transportation, and the internet. With Mercury turning retrograde communications and transportation may be erratic or we may find ourselves rehashing old problems.

While traversing the zodiac from its new to full position, Scorpio to Gemini, the Moon describes an arc with the Sun, which acts as a moving pivot because this brand of astrology uses the Earth as its reference. During this arc the Moon contacts (conjuncts and sign ingresses) the planets and signs that lie in her path. These contacts are listed below. For additional information about the Moon's current contacts, check out Cafe Astrology's This Week in Astrology.

In this phase, the Moon forms a T-square with the Sun in opposition and retrograde Neptune square. The aspect between Sun, Moon and Neptune is exact with Virgo being the empty arm.

In this chart the Moon is in the 8th house, which is ruled by the Pluto. The signs currently assigned to the house by its relation to the Ascendant are Gemini and Cancer. Traditionally the 8th house indicates conditions centering on

the national debt, taxes, what the people must pay to the state or nation, credit, mortality rates, insurance, corporate finances, inheritance, capital, loans. (Neptune Café/Keywords page)

By sign the Moon is ruled by Mercury, now retrograde in Sagittarius and transiting the 2nd house with Saturn conjunct.

In the Sagittarius-ascending chart the Moon is in the 6th house, conjunct the Descendant, and ruled by Mercury. There the Moon is conjunct natal Uranus. The 6th house indicates

workers, employment rate, trade unions, civil service workers, health services, health workers, the nation's health, the police, military service, armies, national defense. (Neptune Café/Keywords page)

In this chart the sign and house ruler Mercury is retrograde in Sagittarius and transiting the 1st house.

In both charts Mercury is emphasized, more so in the Sagittarius-ascending chart. And in both charts Mercury is conjunct Saturn, which tends to constrict and slow matters. In this case communications.
