This cycle begins with the Sun and new Moon at 2° Capricorn and comes to fruition with the full Moon balanced against the Sun on the Cancer/Capricorn axis at 18° Cancer. This is the thirteenth calendar cycle of 2011, but the first Moon cycle of the new year. For the next seven months the new Moon with occur in one month and the full Moon in the following month; in August 2012, they will once again occur in the same month.
The Moon in Capricorn approaches life with seriousness and with emotions somewhat suppressed. There is a practical awareness of schedule and timing. This new Moon marks a conjunct with Pluto, which suggests it may be time to do a personal analysis in relation to one's current situation.
Follow up:
The Moon and Sun are conjunct Pluto at this new Moon event, bringing the issues that Pluto in Capricorn personifies into this Moon cycle. Expect emotional extremes at times, internal and external power struggles. Focus on attaining the inner harmony that may be realized by transcending the turmoil and keep in mind that the new Moon offers a portal to new beginnings.
Again we see in this chart the majority of planets and lights contained in one half of the chart -- framed by an out-of-sign opposition between Saturn in Libra and Jupiter in Taurus -- with Mars again the outlier. The opposition between transiting Jupiter and Saturn tests the balance between desiring to improve and one's personal limitations, whether actual or perceived. Mars in Virgo, because of its position, becomes the focal point for all of the factors (planets and lights) contained in this attempt to balance growth and limitation, expansion and contraction.
In researching Mars in Virgo I came across this observation by medical astrologer Lynn Coiner
I have found in my medical research that Virgo is associated with sugars in the body and sugar metabolism. When Mars transits Virgo, I have recorded many times having great difficulty when I eat sugary foods. Especially in Virgo, sugar causes inflammations and this, in turn, affects my moods – becoming more irritable and agitated.
You can find a very good description of the new Moon and its effects at Cafe Astrology under "This Week in Astrology."
This new Moon occurs in the U.S.'s 2nd house, emphasizing economy, the nation's products and values. The Moon's conjunct with Pluto brings in big business and its combined financial and/or political power. The natural ruler of the 2nd house is Venus; the ruler in the U.S. chart is Jupiter. In the natal chart they are conjunct in Cancer and ruled by the Moon. The new Moon is trine transiting Jupiter in Taurus and in opposition to natal Venus and Jupiter. Again the theme of expansion vs. limitation is shown. Capricorn is a detrimental position for the Moon, suggesting that those represented by the Moon (the people, national security needs, basic necessities (food, clothing, and shelter), women, national mood, polls, change -- Neptune Cafe) are at a disadvantage.
Two book have come to my attention lately that relate to this post:
- Jack Abramoff--Capitol Punishment: The Hard Truth About Washington Corruption From America's Most Notorious Lobbyist, WND Books, 2011
- Lawrence Lessig--Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress--and a Plan to Stop It, Twelve, 2011
The full Moon
When the Moon reaches its position at full -- opposite the sun -- it will be in Cancer, its own sign. The axis being activated is Cancer/Capricorn, home and family versus career. With the Moon in her own sign, home and family will dominate. The push-pull of Jupiter in Taurus and Saturn in Libra is square the Sun-Moon axis, adding growth versus limitation to the mix.
The transiting Moon in Cancer combined with Christmas may add a longing to be with family to the festivities. There is an enhanced desire for tradition countered by an awareness of its restrictions. In other words, there are mixed emotions concerning the whole holiday experience.
While traversing the zodiac from its new to full position, the Moon's contacts are --

The full Moon this month is in the U.S.'s 9th house, placing her emphasis on:
religion, law and order, justice, the court system, morality, higher education, publishing, international concerns, foreign affairs, shipping, belief systems
-- Neptune Cafe's keywords page
The natural ruler of the 9th is Jupiter, which has just turned direct and is transiting Taurus. Jupiter's being in Taurus give things a practical, pragmatic tone.
The Moon is the ruler of the sign on the cusp U.S.'s 9th house, so she is at home there. She is stationed on the midpoint between natal Sun and Mercury indicating sensitivity to the thoughts and needs of others.
