2011 Moon Cycle 1: new Moon in Capricorn, full Moon in Cancer
Here are the Moon charts for January:

During this cycle we find the Sun and new Moon at 13° Capricorn and the full Moon balanced against the Sun on the Cancer/Capricorn axis at 29° Cancer. This is the first calendar cycle of the year and the tenth in the astrological year.
The Winter Ingress for this year (December 21, 11:40 pm) was unusual because of a total lunar eclipse that coincided with the solstice, an occurrence that last happened in 1638. At this ingress the Sun was conjunct Pallas Athena in Capricorn with the Moon in opposition in Cancer (the full Moon occurred at 29° Gemini). There was a stellium in Capricorn (Sun-P.Athena-Pluto-Mars-Ceres), suggesting a continuation of the status quo and business as usual with undertones of hard work, delays and sheer drudgery. But the conjunct with P.Athena may be a ray of hope for those willing to widen their perspective. While P.Athena's attributes are often given as problem-solving skills and pattern-recognition, her talents also include strength, wisdom, diplomacy, and creativity. And one writer says:
Pallas Athene was the progenitor of the "Golden Mean", the magical midpoint, the mediating concept that bridges the two extremes. --Raven Kaldera
Changes in format:
- You may note that I'm using a new layout for new and full Moon charts, mainly because the aspect grid includes the asteroids. It may not be as pretty, but there's more information.
- Also, I will no longer be publishing the biwheel chart comparing the new and full Moons. I'm concerned that the format is misleading. If you found it useful, let me know and I'll begin posting it again.
Follow up:
The Moon in Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, now in Libra. While Saturn, aka Father Time, can be heavy-handed, he is exalted in Libra, where temperance and balance are exemplified. On the whole, though, the Moon in Capricorn subdues emotions and can make one unresponsive.
Note that again this month all of the planets, lights and asteroids are contained in the western hemisphere with Hera in Virgo at the eastern extreme and Uranus in Pisces at the western. I read it as personal objectives still being overwhelmed by social ones.
This lunar cycle begins with the Sun-Moon dyad conjunct the 3rd house cusp and positioned within the house. The duo is in direct opposition to the U.S.'s natal sun. The natal sun's position in Cancer and in the 9th house speaks of the Pilgrim's settling America to attain religious freedom, law-and-order, justice, and the all-American dream of family + house = home (Cancer influence). Sun-Moon in the 3rd house accentuates mass media, freedom of speech and the internet, and Capricorn brings in the influence of big business. While these sets of influence may seem dissident, I'm beginning to see that giving credence to what we see in the news is undermining what we believe in.
The full Moon
The full Moon balances on the Cancer/Capricorn axis. Moon is once again a singleton to the remaining planets, asteroids and light (Sun) -- all contained in the signs Virgo through Pisces, inclusive. Here the Moon forms a wedge, being trine Jupiter in Pisces and sextile Juno in Virgo. For a brief moment before the Moon passes into Aquarius, there will be a harmonious interplay of emotion, good will, and possibly a marriage proposal.
This full Moon falls in the 9th house; I refer you to what was said above about the 3rd and 9th houses. However at this phase the Moon is in her own sign and more powerful -- three cheers for the American dream.
