New Moon @ 05° Scorpio 54′

Here are two charts for the new Moon on 28 October 2008, 11:15 PM (GMT).

What other astrologers have to say...

Neith at realAstrologers.com says about this new Moon:

The power and mystery of Scorpio moves onto the scene with the New Moon on Tuesday at 5°54′ Scorpio and is enhanced by the presence of Mars, co-ruler of Scorpio along with Pluto.

If we consider the combination of the New Moon's sense of being pregnant with possibilities and Scorpio's capacity for regeneration, we begin to get an idea of what is ahead. Of course, since it is Scorpio in charge, it's very likely something will have to be released or die before the new can emerge.

The Sun and Moon essentially are unaspected by the other planets, but Mars in Scorpio stands in for them by aspecting just about everything. In fact, all the planets in earth and water signs form a pattern call the basket or cradle, with the base being formed by the waxing opposition of Saturn and Uranus. It is as if the energy being generated by the opposition is being moved outwards through Jupiter in Capricorn and Mars in Scorpio. This energy in general is more subtle in expression than the same formation in fire and air would produce. Mars is at home in Scorpio and is incredibly powerful, but is much more inclined to work behind the scenes rather than on center stage. Jupiter is constrained in Capricorn and isn't up to make bold statements right now. The overall result is a sense of gestation and biding one's time.

Mercury is thankfully direct now in Libra and is trine Neptune in Aquarius, encouraging us to look at the big picture with detachment and compassion. With Neptune currently at a standstill preparing to go direct on November 2, it is a good time to turn inward and contemplate where we are on our individual paths and what changes we want to implement. Here, too, we are in a holding pattern.

The increasing tension in the atmosphere is aided and abetted by a tightening T-square with Venus at the apex and Saturn-Uranus as the base. This formation will be exact on November 3, the day before the presidential election in the USA. On a personal level, if you have planets or angles at 18-19 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces, you will no doubt already be aware of the tension! Thankfully, once we are past November 4, these energies will start to slowly dissipate.

Pluto is now at 29° Sagittarius and is grinding down the days until he moves into Capricorn. If the feedback we are getting on Real Astrologers is any indication, there are many people who are hovering between trepidation and anticipation of that move. Pat and I plan on addressing these concerns over the course of the next month or so as best we can.

Molly Hall at About.com: Astrology writing about the new Moon in Scorpio says:

This new Moon in Scorpio (Exact on November 9th, 6:03 pm EST) is psychically rich, making it a great time to be still and tune into higher wisdom. Also known as Lunar Samhain, the veil between worlds is at its most crossable, making all kinds of spirit communication possible. With no lunar light, the spirit turns inward, to take a look around the personal interior, and ponder realms we can't see with our eyes.

...

Scorpio rightly deserves its lusty reputation, but the desire serves a purpose, too. This sign is about spreading seeds of potential, and burying them where they will grow best. Scorpio is a sign that understands the nature of power, and how to shift it in unseen ways. This new Moon offers a chance to dig deep within yourself for "source material" for your genius dreams. This may mean planting seeds and patiently nurturing them, or taking your raw material, and changing its form. ...

My take..
   ..on the new Moon

As usual, I find myself looking at the patterns. This time it's a bucket with Saturn in Virgo opposing Uranus in Pisces forming the rim. In the bucket are Mars in Virgo and Jupiter in Capricorn. All these planets are sextile one another.

Forming the handle of the bucket, and forming a T-square with Saturn and Uranus, is Pallas Athena in Gemini. Pallas, being an asteroid, is new to the astrological pantheon and not even a planet.

Not knowing how to intrepret Pallas Athena's presence, I googled "pallas athena square Saturn" for something that might guide me. This is what caught my attention:

Pallas Athena sometimes interchanges with Venus placements and is associated with weaving, justice, and the law. In Greek mythology, Pallas Athena emerges from her father's head. This happens right after (Jupiter) Zeus, Athena's father devours her mother, Metis, the Woman of Wisdom, his pregnant consort. In full armor and brandishing a war cry, Athena springs forth out of Zeus' head. Her birth is an example of parthenogenesis, a noun meaning the development of an egg without fertilization. The Parthenon, the temple of Athena Parthenos, in Athens, Greece, is named after this phenomenon as well as Athena's virgin-Goddess status. Athena becomes the Goddess to whom the heroes and heroines go for help and assistance and for the wisdom of strategy for which she is known. If she believes in your cause, she advises you on a strategy and provides you with the tools necessary for success. A virgin-Goddess in the sense that she is an individual unto herself, Athena is also a master weaver and mentor for the weaving and textiles of ancient Greece. Her capacity to weave together stories, ideas, concepts, and plans is known. Prominently placed in your horoscope or your company's horoscope, she can be of great help in these areas, but also quite ruthless as well as determined if not balanced by other factors. (from "Business Astrology 101" by Georgia Anna Stathis © 2001)

Athena's placement as the handle of the bucket gives her the role of inspirer or agitator, depending on your perspective. The bucket that she carries is contained by a Saturn-Uranus opposition.

About the Saturn/Uranus combo, Michael Munkasey in Midpoints: Unleashing the Power of the Planets says that the basic ideas here

..symbolize the tension between maintaining traditional methods and introducing innovative techniques when facing life's alternatives. Here your need to balance new ideas with conservative objectives begins. You may find that restrictions arise suddenly and without warning, encounter rigidity which leads to rebuffs, or find a commitment to reach for distinctive or unique goals. You may find your insight into new methods of problem solving is diminished, receive disappointments from unexpected sources, or have to tread carefully when introducing new ideas. Revisions which are changes to procedures but simplify your work, the compromise which exists between those of the "old school" and those with "fresh ideas," and pessimism which is broken by unpredictable circumstances can also be found here. These motifs also mirror the conflict between old ways and new ideas.

Adding to this mix are Mars representing irritation and impatience with those proposing new ways and Jupiter, usually open to change, but here grounded in preserving the status quo.

..on the new Moon as it relates to the U.S. natal chart

This new Moon conjuncts the US's natal ascendant, so whatever it initiates will have a personal importance to it, and each of us will feel it personally.

Transiting Saturn (on the rim of the bucket above) is conjuncting natal Neptune. This adds Neptune to the mix, suggesting that illusion is part of the changes proposed. Further, Saturn sits on the cusp of the 11th house, home of the national treasury.
